More information about the video content bellow: 1. Tonga became known in the West as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan. 2. The primary island, Tongatapu, has a number of tricks up its sleeve, such as the spectacular blowholes along the south western coastline. You’ll find four miles of coast with countless blowholes that can spout water 30 meters high. Go ahead and take bus from Nukualofa towards the village of Houma (Half an hour) and make sure to be there at high tide for any truly spectacular view. 3. The current royal dynasty of Tonga was founded in 1831 by Taufa’ahau Tupou, who took the name George I. He consolidated the kingdom by conquest and in 1875 granted a constitution. Tonga became independent on June 4, 1970. The government is largely controlled by the king, his nominees, and a small group of hereditary nobles. 4. Not much is known before European contact because of the lack of a writing system, but oral history has survived and been recorded after the arrival of the Europeans. By the 12th century, Tongans and the Tongan paramount chief, the Tuʻi Tonga, had a reputation across the central Pacific—from Niue, Samoa, Rotuma, Wallis & Futuna, New Caledonia to Tikopia—leading some historians to speak of a Tuʻi Tonga Empire. 5. Despite being a small country, Tonga has its own army. Furthermore, it participated in WWI, as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and in WWII. In recent times, Tongan soldiers were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq and participated in several peace keeping missions. 6. Located in Oceania, Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Its 169 islands, 36 of them inhabited cover an 800-kilometre-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, is where the capital city of Nukuʻalofa is located. 7. The Free Wesleyan Church is the largest Methodist denomination in Tonga, and also the state church. Everyday life is heavily influenced by Polynesian traditions and especially by the Christian faith; for example, all commerce and entertainment activities cease on Sunday, from the beginning of the day at midnight, to the end of the day at midnight. The constitution declares the Sabbath sacred forever. For more info and to make donations go to: www.videojuggle.com/hiko HIKO is a tradition where female culture entwines with object manipulation. It is a Polynesian culture where only women juggle....and they juggle tui tui nuts from the trees in a circular or shower pattern as part of the culture. HIKO is an ancient song, a cultural dance, a competition and a game. It is still alive after 3,000 years of Tongan culture. Video length is 5:50 and is a preview for a documentary in the making. Connie "Paprika" Leaverton is the producer/director and found this culture of women jugglers when she directed the documentary "Trailblazers: Women Who Juggle." In January of 2012, Leaverton visited the Tongan islands to see if the HIKO Culture was still alive. It is! She documented for 3 weeks and plans to return in July of 3013 to continue shooting the untold story. Verbal history is the norm for Tonga and it is passed down through generations and rarely written. It is important for Tongan history, culture and tradition that Leaverton record the HIKO story during her next visit the summer of 2013. Visit www.videojuggle.com/hiko for more info and a donation link. [2016 Youth Meets ICH] Video 4. Kie Making By ‘Atenisi Institute, Tonga This video is about the methods of making Tongan fine mats, kie. Kie are used for special events, such as birthdays, weddings, and other celebrations in Tonga. Kie heritage is also representative of communal work and the gathering of the community’s women who share stories while working. ICHCAP supports youth participation in ICH safeguarding by undertaking a new project, Video Creation with the Young Generation: Youth Meets ICH. This project is aiming to enhance the younger generations’ awareness and understanding about intangible cultural heritage (ICH). Through this project, young people can conduct interviews, make videos, and share their work with others. We hope that everyone participating will be inspired by ICH and the stories we can tell through video.

Keep the Adventures Coming! https://www.patreon.com/nahoa Tonga, the unexpected Oasis. When we set off this season, Tonga was on the list but it was heavily overshadowed by the likes of French Polynesia, Marquesas and the Cook Islands. The focus was on places like Bora Bora, Mo'orea and Aitutaki. So let me tell you, we were very surprised by how much we LOVE Tonga. LOVE! Tonga is a Sovereign nation and the first of such we have visited in our Pacific Island tour. It has a different vibe. An authentic one. With 196 islands, only 36 are inhabited. You can can catch a bit of island life or truly get away from it all. In this Adventure, we land in the Vava’u group in the town of Neiafu to check in with customs. The town is a bustling place with markets full of fish and veg. Crazy little Chinese shops stuffed with everything you could need. And a Moorings charter fleet that helps the economy sustain many friendly Yachty bars and restaurants. We were hooked right away and decided that this is where we would spend the last couple months of our season before heading south to get away from cyclone territory. The beauty of the Tongan Kingdom is stunning. The beaches are pristine and the people welcoming to their villages. Follow along as we test our limits while free diving in and around Mariner’s and Swallow’s Caves, skim the warm waters in some of the best kite boarding sessions we have had to date. Not to mention the creepiest of spiders with a weird golden web. The Kindom of Tonga holds a very special place in our heart.
