**********************MORE INFO********************** Hello Lovelies, I've been away for a while but here is a treat for you until I am back in the states!!! This is only episode 1 of my trip to Tonga. It's been a GREAT experience coming back to my homeland and seeing the house I grew up in to the school that I attended. Everything here seems to be the way that I remember even the faces of the ones I love. They seem to never really age here as if I'm stepping into a time machine. I've enjoyed visiting our plantation that I used to run around freely in with my siblings. Swinging on vines pretending to be 'George of the Jungle' to feeding the pigs that we would later kill and eat. HAHAHA. These were the days! Days without social media, days where we didn't really talk back to our parents,...

For more info and to make donations go to: www.videojuggle.com/hiko HIKO is a tradition where female culture entwines with object manipulation. It is a Polynesian culture where only women juggle....and they juggle tui tui nuts from the trees in a circular or shower pattern as part of the culture. HIKO is an ancient song, a cultural dance, a competition and a game. It is still alive after 3,000 years of Tongan culture. Video length is 5:50 and is a preview for a documentary in the making. Connie "Paprika" Leaverton is the producer/director and found this culture of women jugglers when she directed the documentary "Trailblazers: Women Who Juggle." In January of 2012, Leaverton visited the Tongan islands to see if the HIKO Culture was still alive. It is! She documented for 3 weeks...

More information about the video content bellow: 1. Tonga became known in the West as the Friendly Islands because of the congenial reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit in 1773. He arrived at the time of the ʻinasi festival, the yearly donation of the First Fruits to the Tuʻi Tonga (the islands' paramount chief) and so received an invitation to the festivities. According to the writer William Mariner, the chiefs wanted to kill Cook during the gathering but could not agree on a plan. 2. The primary island, Tongatapu, has a number of tricks up its sleeve, such as the spectacular blowholes along the south western coastline. You’ll find four miles of coast with countless blowholes that can spout water 30 meters high. Go ahead and take bus from Nukualofa towards the village of Houma (Half an hour) and make sure to be there at high tide for any truly spectacular view. 3. The current royal dynasty of Tonga was founded in 1831 by Taufa’ahau Tupou, who took the name George I. He consolidated the kingdom by conquest and in 1875 granted a constitution. Tonga became independent on June 4, 1970. The government is largely controlled by the king, his nominees, and a small group of hereditary nobles. 4. Not much is known before European contact because of the lack of a writing system, but oral history has survived and been recorded after the arrival of the Europeans. By the 12th century, Tongans and the Tongan paramount chief, the Tuʻi Tonga, had a reputation across the central Pacific—from Niue, Samoa, Rotuma, Wallis & Futuna, New Caledonia to Tikopia—leading some historians to speak of a Tuʻi Tonga Empire. 5. Despite being a small country, Tonga has its own army. Furthermore, it participated in WWI, as part of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force, and in WWII. In recent times, Tongan soldiers were sent to Afghanistan and Iraq and participated in several peace keeping missions. 6. Located in Oceania, Tonga is an archipelago in the South Pacific Ocean, directly south of Samoa and about two-thirds of the way from Hawaii to New Zealand. Its 169 islands, 36 of them inhabited cover an 800-kilometre-long north-south line. The largest island, Tongatapu, is where the capital city of Nukuʻalofa is located. 7. The Free Wesleyan Church is the largest Methodist denomination in Tonga, and also the state church. Everyday life is heavily influenced by Polynesian traditions and especially by the Christian faith; for example, all commerce and entertainment activities cease on Sunday, from the beginning of the day at midnight, to the end of the day at midnight. The constitution declares the Sabbath sacred forever. Days without social media, days where we didn't really talk back to our parents, days where we all lived in the same house... Now, we are all grown up but it was sooo good to come and relive some of those memories. From rollerblading in the rain with my siblings, eating the same food EVERY Sunday (UMU), making home videos, spending a lot of time with family, having family prayers every night before bed and so much more. All the things that cost absolutely nothing - THE BEST THINGS IN LIFE! Don't take things for granted and learn to be thankful each and EVERYDAY! Wake up each morning and write down a few things that you are thankful for. Focus on the positive... Until my next video, Lesieli

It is! She documented for 3 weeks and plans to return in July of 3013 to continue shooting the untold story. Verbal history is the norm for Tonga and it is passed down through generations and rarely written. It is important for Tongan history, culture and tradition that Leaverton record the HIKO story during her next visit the summer of 2013.
